McCarroll developed an interest in music at a young age, receiving his first drum kit when he was six years old. He met Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan while playing for a local football team, and together with Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, they formed a band called The Rain. After replacing their original singer with Liam Gallagher, the band was renamed Oasis, inspired by a poster in Liam's room. Liam's brother, Noel Gallagher, later joined as the lead guitarist and primary songwriter, completing the classic lineup.
As the drummer for Oasis from 1991 to 1995, McCarroll played on their debut album, Definitely Maybe, which became the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. He also performed on early singles such as "Supersonic," "Shakermaker," and "Live Forever." Despite the band's success, tensions arose, particularly between McCarroll and Noel Gallagher, who criticized McCarroll's drumming abilities. In April 1995, McCarroll was dismissed from the band and replaced by Alan White.
Following his departure, McCarroll filed a lawsuit against Oasis in 1999, seeking a share of the band's earnings. The case was settled out of court for £550,000, with McCarroll agreeing to relinquish future royalties. In 2010, he published a memoir titled Oasis: The Truth, providing an insider's perspective on his time with the band and the circumstances leading to his exit.
After leaving Oasis, McCarroll largely stepped away from the music industry. He was last seen performing with the band Raika in 2000. In 2016, he contributed to the documentary Oasis: Supersonic, reflecting on the band's early years. In August 2021, McCarroll suffered a heart attack but reported a positive recovery after receiving medical treatment.
As of 2020, Smith continues to engage in various musical projects, including his ongoing work with The Lickerish Quartet. His extensive experience and collaborative spirit ensure his continued relevance and influence in the music industry
In 2024, rumors of an Oasis reunion began circulating, with reports suggesting that the Gallagher brothers had reconciled. However, McCarroll clarified that he would not be participating in the reunion tour but expressed happiness for the band and their fans.
