On 24 February 1999, Oasis began rehearsing at The Music Bank studios in Bermondsey, London, as work gathered pace on their fourth studio album. The band also confirmed that producer and mixer Mark “Spike” Stent would be involved in the project.
The sessions came after the scale and exhaustion of Be Here Now, and Noel Gallagher was determined to change direction. New influences, loops, electronic textures and a darker lyrical mood began to replace some of the dense guitar triumphalism associated with the previous album.
The record would become Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. Its creation unfolded alongside major upheaval in the band, including the departures of Bonehead and Guigsy, making the album both a musical reset and the dividing line between two Oasis line-ups.
