On 25 August 1999, Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan announced that he was leaving Oasis, little more than two weeks after Bonehead’s departure. The founding bassist reportedly informed the band by fax and then avoided calls from the Gallagher brothers.
Noel and Liam Gallagher faced the press at London’s Water Rats to address the loss of two original members in the middle of preparations for a new album and tour. They insisted Oasis would continue and began the search for a replacement guitarist and bassist.
Guigsy’s exit completed the break-up of the original Manchester core around the Gallaghers. Although both he and Bonehead had played during the album sessions, neither would appear in the new touring line-up, closing one chapter of Oasis history before the next record had even been released.
