Lyrics

Gonna take you off my list of to-dos
Gonna sing my soul
Shake off these blues
'Cause it's alright, it's alright now
When I wake up and I
Hear you say
There's no love worth chasing yesterday
'Cause it's alright, it's alright now

Yes I know
I've been bold
I didn't do what I was told
Yes I know
You soft soap
You didn't do what I was told

I ain't looking for you nine to five
I'm sick of wasting my sweet, precious time
'Cause it's alright, it's alright now

Yes I know
I've been bold
I didn't do what I was told
Yes I know
You sound so
You didn't do what I was told

Lay it on me
Lay it on me
Lay it on me, yeah

Lay it on me
Lay it on me
Lay it on me, yeah

Lay it on me
Lay it on me, yeah
Lay it on me, oh yeah
Lay it on me
Lay it on me, yeah
Lay it on me, oh yeah

Yes I know
I've been bold
I didn't do what I was told
Yes I know
You sound so
You didn't do what I was told

Yes I know
I've been bold
I didn't do what I was told
Yes I know
You sound so
You didn't do what I was told

Notes

Bold" is a song by Liam Gallagher from his debut solo album As You Were (released in 2017). It is the second track on the album.

Liam Gallagher (former Oasis frontman) wrote the song himself. It was one of the first tracks composed for the album. An early acoustic version was performed publicly in July 2015 at an Irish pub in Charlestown, County Mayo—marking one of his first appearances after Beady Eye. Former Oasis guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs contributed guitar to the recorded version. Producers included Iain Archer and Dan Grech-Marguerat.

Themes and lyricsThe song is relatively slow-tempo and reflective. It addresses Gallagher’s bold, independent streak (“Yes I know / I’ve been bold / I didn’t do what I was told”) in the context of his 2014 divorce from Nicole Appleton and the fallout from an affair. He has said it also targets friends who “scarper when the shit hits the fan.” Key lines include:

  • “Gonna take you off my list of to-dos / Gonna sing my soul / Shake off these blues / ’Cause it’s alright, it’s alright now”
  • A reference to “There’s no love worth chasing yesterday” (nodding to Noel Gallagher’s Chasing Yesterday album)
  • The repeated bridge “Lay it on me”

Overall, it conveys self-acceptance, moving on, and refusing to conform after personal turmoil.

Reception and performance

  • It charted at No. 60 on the UK Singles Chart (and higher on some midweek/update charts).
  • It has been a regular live favourite, performed over 100 times (especially 2017–2019).
  • Fan and critic reception has generally been positive; it often scores in the low-to-mid 80s on aggregate sites.

The album As You Were marked Gallagher’s successful return as a solo artist after Oasis and Beady Eye, going to No. 1 in the UK. “Bold” sits alongside tracks like “Wall of Glass,” “Greedy Soul,” and “For What It’s Worth.”
