Release Notes

"This Is The Place" is the third extended play (EP) by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, released in late 2019. The EP follows the band's previous release, Black Star Dancing, continuing the experimentation with genres like psychedelia, electronic, and dance-rock, which marked a new creative chapter for Noel Gallagher. The title track, This Is The Place, along with two other new songs and two remixes, reflects Gallagher's ongoing musical evolution, blending his Britpop roots with more adventurous, contemporary production techniques.

The EP was produced by Noel Gallagher, alongside regular collaborator Paul Stacey. The production shifts from the familiar Britpop and rock tones of Gallagher's earlier solo work to embrace more experimental elements, with influences ranging from psychedelia, French pop, and electronic music. The EP sees Noel further exploring sounds that had begun to appear in his previous release, Black Star Dancing. The mixing of live instruments with electronic production creates a dreamy, textured soundscape throughout the record.

While This Is The Place was not released as a full album, it performed well in the UK, bolstered by strong airplay of the title track. The EP reached #1 on the UK Vinyl Singles Chart and was particularly well-received in the UK indie and alternative music scene. As a result of its experimental nature, it showcased Noel’s willingness to push boundaries, which was praised by critics and fans alike.

This Is The Place was generally well-received by critics, who praised Gallagher's willingness to experiment and evolve his sound. While some fans of his more traditional rock style found the shift unexpected, many critics saw it as a refreshing direction for an artist who has consistently pushed the boundaries of his music. Reviews from major publications included:

NME praised the EP’s title track for its “lush, cosmic sound” and called it “a perfect late-summer anthem.”

Clash Magazine highlighted Evil Flower as “a stand-out track that exemplifies Gallagher’s adventurous spirit.”

The Guardian described the EP as “a collection of experimental pop gems, with psychedelic undertones and infectious grooves.”
