On 20 November 1998, Liam Gallagher and Ocean Colour Scene guitarist Steve Cradock recorded a version of The Jam’s Carnation at Lynchmob Studios in London. The session also brought together Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller and drummer Steve White.

The recording was made for Fire & Skill: The Songs of the Jam, a tribute album built around new interpretations of Paul Weller’s former band. Liam’s vocal gave Carnation a bruised, direct quality while the presence of Weller connected the performance to the original song.

The collaboration captured the close musical relationship between the Gallagher circle, Ocean Colour Scene and Weller during the late 1990s. It also offered a rare Oasis-adjacent recording during the relatively quiet period

between Be Here Now and the sessions for the band’s fourth album.
